Blood borne pathogens such as HIV and Hepatitis which are often carried by intravenous drug users are highly infectious and contact with them can have very serious and sometimes life threatening consequences. These diseases can be found on discarded hypodermic needles and other drug paraphenalia.
Items classified as 'sharps' can include Hypodermic needles, Phials, Scalpels, Razors and razor blades, Syringes, Glass and any number of other items that may cause laceration or puncture. The risks associated with to removal of contaminated sharps include puncture wounds and the transmission of blood borns pathogens such as HIV and Hepatitis B and is a potentially dangerous undertaking. It should therefore not be carried out by untrained individuals.

A full site inspection and risk assessments are always performed before removal of any needles, syringes and sharps items.
All sharps removal, incineration and disinfection of the sites are carried out in full accordance with Health & Safety, government and COSHH procedures.
